When McPherson’s seventh-grade A-girls played Hays earlier this year, a wave of sickness was going through the team and it wasn’t at full strength.
MMS lost that game, its only blemish of the year.
On Thursday, the Bullpups avenged that loss with an impressive 34-18 victory behind 11 points by Cassie Cooks and 10 by Lakyn Schieferecke.
“The girls played their best overall game of the season,” MMS coach Jacque Gehrt said. “Defense was the key. Our only loss of the year was to Hays, and in that game we let their two best players score 30 of their 36 points. Tonight, we held those same players to only 10 points. Our guards were able to handle their full-court pressure much better this time around and we really valued each possession. We were also 9 of 13 from the free throw line (including 7 of 9 from point guard Lakyn Schieferecke), whereas Hays was 0 of 7. I'm proud of the girls for doing things the right way tonight and coming away with a big victory.”
MMS takes a 14-1 record into the season finale Tuesday at Great Bend.
The B-team is now 10-5 after seven points by Stacey Pham and six by Kaliah Tice led the Bullpups to a 27-22 victory.
“Better ballhandling and smarter passes led to a big second half offensively for the girls,” Gehrt said. “I was also pleased with our defensive effort in the second half, as we held them to only 8 second-half points.”
