The question in the third-place game of the McPherson Invitational on Saturday was: which team was going to survive its scoring drought to win?

Wichita Heights went 5:45 of the fourth quarter without a point and Shawnee Mission East went 5:12.

In the end, it was Heights that prevailed, 40-39.

Heights’ Davis Bahner scored with 5:38 left in the game to make it 38-30 in favor of the Falcons, but they didn’t score again until 3.2 seconds left on a pair of free throws by Davon Gill that gave the Falcons a 3-point lead.

Shawnee Mission East didn’t score in the fourth quarter until the 2:48 mark to make it 38-32 and got as close as 38-37.

Samaj Hervey led the Falcons with 13 points and Davon Gill scored 12. Jay Guastello scored 14 for the Lancers and Zeb Vermillion had his best game of the tournament with 10 points.

Lucas Jones, who had been the tournament’s leading scorer through two nights, was held to nine points and 10 rebounds.
