Hays scored the first two points of the fourth quarter to finally catch Valley Center in the consolation round of the Mid America Classic on Friday, but the Hornets responded with a 13-0 Taylor Latimer-led run to pull away for a 53-36 victory.

Valley Center will play for fifth place at 3:45 p.m. Friday, while Hays will get an early start on its trip home by playing at 2 p.m. for seventh.

Valley Center jumped out to a 12-5 lead and maintained it until Hays finally got it tied at 34-all in the opening minutes of the final period.

The Hornets turned it up on the defensive end from there, as the Indians managed only two points the rest the the way, going nearly 6 minutes without point. Latimer keyed the big run with six points and scored 18 in the game.

Kyli Webber chipped in with 13 points. Rebounding was a key as the Hornets had a 41-34 advantage.

Audra Schmeidler led Hays with 17 points and also pulled down seven rebounds.
