With current McPherson College head baseball coach Andrew Ehling transitioning to Director of Athletics by the end of the academic year, McPherson College has announced that associate head coach Shawn Powell will assume the role of head coach for Bulldog baseball.

“Shawn will be a tremendous asset to McPherson College and will hold a high standard of expectations for our student-athletes,” Ehling said.  “I have complete confidence in his abilities to lead our baseball program.”

"Being named the successor to coach Ehling is a great opportunity,” Powell said.  “The program is in good shape and we will continue to recruit student-athletes that represent our college well in the classroom and on the field.  I will be forever grateful to coach Ehling and President (Michael) Schneider for their faith they've shown in me.  We will be prepared, we will be organized, and we will work our tail end off to make this college and the McPherson community proud."

Powell rejoined the college coaching ranks with the Bulldogs in the fall of 2014.  Prior to coming to McPherson, he was employed in the private sector for eight years while also serving as an instructor at Smith Baseball Academy, an assistant coach at Hayden High School in Topeka and as a head coach of the Kansas City Barnstormers summer team.

Powell spent five years coaching at the college level from 2001-2006.  He was an assistant at Butler Community College, Bethany College and Odessa College.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in business management from Kansas Wesleyan University and a Master’s degree from Friends University.
