MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Bethany College’s baseball team was swept by Bacone College in its season opener on Saturday, 7-6 and 7-4.
"We got defined by two innings today," Bethany coach Andrew Bartman said. "We definitely have to come out and pitch it better. Game One we wasted a good start by Clayton Cozzitorto and a home run from Steven Rodriguez. We swung the bats OK for the first time out. Nicholas Ceccarelli and Josiry Cirino swung it well today also. Andrew Gomez came through and held Game Two to give us a chance. The guys never quit and we scratched a few runs late.”
Bethany appeared to have the opener in hand, up 6-2, but collapsed in the final inning as Bacone struck for five runs and the stunning win.
Anthony Burgess went 2 for 2 with two RBIs while Rodriguez added two RBIs and a home run. Ceccarelli also added a 1-for-3 performance with a double and two RBIs. Cozzitorto threw five innings and allowed one earned run on two hits and five walks while striking out five.
Bacone scored five first-inning runs in the second game and was never headed. Gomez did throw 5 2/3 innings of solid relief as Swede starter Chrisiannel Cosme didn’t make it out of the first inning.
