Soukup, Steinert latest MHS swimmers to make state

MANHATTAN — McPherson High’s Gavin Soukup and Spencer Steinert met state-qualifying standards Saturday during the Manhattan Invitational Swimming Meet that was contested KSU’s Natatorium.

“Gavin dropped over 11 seconds from his previous best and placed eighth out of 33 swimmers in that event,” MHS coach Matt Morrow said. “Spencer, who swam this event last year in state, placed 12th and swam his best time of the season.”

In addition, the Bullpups’ versatile Eric Gaeddert met a state standard in his sixth event as he is now qualified in the 200 freestyle.

The Bullpups took ninth place in the 11-team event despite a minimal numbers of entries.

“We will start preparing for our league meet this week and hope to get one or two additional swimmers qualified for state,” Morrow said. “For such a young group, I'm very proud of their work ethic and continued improvement throughout the year.  Our hope is to get a swimmer or two placed in the Top 16 in state.”

500 freestyle — 8. Soukup, 5:46.7. 12. Steinert, 28.73.

100 backstroke — 24. VanGoethem, 1:14.25. 36. Chapman, 1:25.71.

100 breaststroke — 7. Gaeddert, 1:10.19. 11. Soukup, 1:15.59. 27. Stone, 1:22.
