LINDSBORG — The Bethany College Swedes are simply a different basketball team with Gary Jones back in the lineup.
Jones, a 6-5 junior from Kansas City who had missed eight games earlier in the season, gives the Swedes a rim protector with his leaping ability.
It was on display this past week as he earned KCAC Defensive Player of the Week honors announced on Monday.
He had nine rebounds against Southwestern, five on the defensive end. He had seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals against Kansas Wesleyan as the Swedes completed a 1-1 week with a win over their arch-rival.
Jones now has bookend honors as earlier this season he earned an Offensive Player of the Week honor.
He averages 17.1 points per game and 6.1 rebounds. Of his 104 rebounds, 68 of them are on the defensive side of the floor.
"Gary is putting more energy and a renewed focus on defense since returning to our lineup,” Bethany coach Clair Oleen said. “Saturday against Kansas Wesleyan I thought was one of his best defensive efforts of the year and I loved his 7-1 assist to turnover ratio.”
