MHS boys have now won 30 straight

GREAT BEND — After the first few possessions Tuesday night, the faces of the Great Bend boys spoke volumes.

There was a dazed look on the Panthers as they found themselves down 7-0 to McPherson High as quick as a hiccup. They hadn’t even attempted a shot in that span, as MHS suffocated the life out of any offensive set the Panthers tried to run.

The Bullpups went on for a 61-33 victory to improve to 15-0 and run their consecutive-game win streak to 30, which is four short of the school record set over the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

The Bullpups are 38-1 in their last 39 games. MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon now has 395 wins at MHS and if form holds true, he would go for No. 400 on the final night of the season at home against Buhler.

The Bullpups applied 32 minutes of defensive heat to overcome an offense that had its moments, most of them good.

“I thought we had a really good focus,” said Kinnamon, whose team led 32-12 at the half as the Panthers were able to take only 12 shots as MHS’ pressure piled up the turnovers. “I thought defensively, the first half especially, we were just tremendous. I think we had three or four 5-counts. That’s simply effort and I thought we did a really nice job with that.”

The game was so in hand that Kinnamon was more like a hockey coach, making line changes. It would be five Bullpups out, five in. In fact, the reserves’ minutes practically were on par with the first five.

Payton Stephens led MHS with a modest 12 points and Kyler Kinnamon added 10. Ten Bullpups scored.

In the JV game, Mason Alexander erupted with a 31-point firestorm to lead MHS to a 75-51 rout. Wyatt Seidl’s 16 points and 11 by Drew Labertew sparked the freshmen to a 52-28 thrashing.

The Bullpups host Rose Hill on Friday as they take a 6-0 AVCTL D-III record into the homecoming game.
