MANHATTAN — The Bethany College indoor track and field team headed to Kansas State University Friday to compete in the opening day of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. The Swedes crowned three event champions as Morgan Darden won the women's weight throw, Ben Hanson won the men's weight throw and Seth Derr won the men's long jump.
Darden placed first in the women's weight throw with a mark of 16.69m (54-09.25). Karessa Nordyke finished third at 12.99m (42-07.50), followed by Kristi Ohlschwager in fifth at 12.39m (40-07.75) and Briana Dietz in sixth at 12.22m (40-01.25).
On the men's side, Hanson took home first place with a throw of 16.84m (55-03.00). Cody Derr placed fifth at 14.54m (47-08.50), followed by Trey Lyles in eighth at 13.46m (44-02.00). Both Derr and Lyles set personal records.
Seth Derr was crowned champion in the men's long jump with a score of 6.96m (22-10.00). Noah Smucker placed 12th at 5.87m (19-03.25).
Halsie Large finished 10th in the women's long jump at 4.83m (15-10.25).
Elizabeth Benoit placed 11th in the women's 5,000m run at 20:58.39, followed by Kylee Martinez in 17th at 21:34.78.
In the men's 60m hurdles prelims, Noah Smucker qualified for the finals with a time of 9.01.
After five scored events, the Bethany men sit in third place with 22 points while the Swede women are in fourth with 19. Ottawa University currently leads the women (35) while Friends University leads the men (38).
"Morgan Darden and Ben Hanson set conference records en route to winning the weight throws," Bethany coach Ken Ciolek said. "I am very proud of the team. This is one of the strongest starts to a championship in over five years. I am excited for day two as we position well to continue success."
