SHAWNEE, Okla. — Bethany College’s softball team began its season on Friday by splitting its first two games in the Oklahoma Baptist Invitational.
The Swedes defeated future KCAC member Oklahoma Wesleyan 5-2, but lost 7-4 to Columbia College.
"For the first games of the season, we came out and competed well," Bethany coach Janice Esses said. "We played solid defense and had a good outing in the circle. We need to get better with our situational hitting. We stranded 14 runners in Game Two. We look to improve upon our quality at bats and consistency at the plate. It's early, but overall I'm pleased with our effort today."
Jasmine Stewart threw the complete nine-inning game for the Swedes in the opener, allowing two earned runs off seven hits and seven walks while striking out seven. Ashley Montoya recorded three hits while Alyssa Montoya and Emily Causey each had two RBIs.
Alyssa Montoya hit a two-run homer for the Swedes in the second game, but it wasn’t enough.
Camille McIver got the start for the Swedes, throwing 4 1/3 innings and allowing three earned runs off seven hits while striking out two.
Bethany plays two more games today in the tournament.
