Tigers prevail in overtime

LAWRENCE — It was gut-check time for Central Christian College’s Tigers Saturday night and they responded accordingly.

The Tigers outscored Haskell 18-15 in overtime to emerge from a wild shootout with a 110-107 victory.

Central had a trio of 20-point-plus scorers, as Michael Gholston scored 25, Alonzo Stafford 24 and Dustin Rojas 22. Central made 13 3-pointers, including six by Rojas and four by Gholston. 

It was a tight game all the way as CCC led 42-41 at the half and neither team played much defense in the second half as regulation ended up tied at 92.

Central, which was coming off a shocking loss Friday at last-place Oklahoma Wesleyan and then had to turn around and make the long trip today, is now 5-7 in the MCAC with two games left to play. The Tigers are assured of another winning regular season as they are now 15-11 overall. They have never had a losing season under coach Tony Romero.

Central hosts Bellevue on Friday and Waldorf on Saturday. Those two teams are tied for second in the MCAC at 9-3.

• HASKELL WOMEN 78, CENTRAL 54 — Haskell is a game back of MCAC co-leaders Oklahoma Wesleyan and College of the Ozarks heading into the final week of the regular season after defeating Central, which is now 3-9 and tied for fifth place with York.

Ashlyn Garza scored 14 points for CCC, which was out of it by halftime, down 44-27.

The Lady Tigers, 9-19 overall, host College of St. Mary on Friday, last-place Waldorf on Saturday.
