HOISINGTON — It couldn’t have been much closer.

Smoky Valley’s wrestling team outlasted host Hoisington by a scant half-point on Saturday to win the Central Kansas League championship.

The Vikings, buoyed by four individual champions, scored 180 points while Hoisington tallied 179 1/2. Pratt (156) was in the hunt before taking third in the nine-team field.

The Vikings received championships from Austin Lustfield at 113, undefeated Austin Cook at 182, Nils Peterson at 195 and Jarod DeMott at 220.

Cook, who is the odd-on favorite to win the Class 4A title, won all five of his matches by a fall and his 35-0, 79-0 over the last two years. DeMott had four pins. Lustfield was 4-1, but took first even though he lost to Nickerson’s Cody Salazar in the round-robin division.

The Vikings will compete Saturday in regional action at Hays.
