On February 22, from 2 – 4 p.m., students and parents can meet one–on–one with financial aid advisors at the free College Goal Sunday event. They will receive help filling out the required Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the first step to apply for federal aid. The closest locations for McPherson County students are in Hutchinson – Hutchinson Community College-Shears Technology Center and in Salina – Salina Area Technical College-Building A.
In addition, $11,500 in scholarships will be awarded to students who attend the event. One attendee will receive a $500 scholarship at each of the 23 College Goal Sunday locations. The scholarship can be used for the 2015 academic year at any college or trade school in the country, provided the student is a first semester freshman in the fall of 2015.
Each year, the U.S. Department of Education makes nearly $140 billion in post–secondary financial aid available to students throughout the nation. College Goal Sunday makes applying for financial aid easier.
According to the latest annual survey by the College Board, the nation’s public four-year universities increased tuition by 2.9 percent in 2012-13. Private four-year university tuition increased 3.8 percent and public two-year college tuition increased 3.5 percent. Many families aren’t prepared for the high costs.
Families who have completed their 2014 income tax returns or bring their 2014 earnings statements to College Goal Sunday will be able to complete the FAFSA online. Last year College Goal Sunday helped more than 700 Kansas students obtain financial aid. Volunteers and financial aid professionals will staff the 17th annual event.
