HUTCHINSON — McPherson High's boys were able to stay out of the mud Friday night.

The Hutchinson Salthawks did their best to muddy up the game with the No. 1-ranked Bullpups, but MHS was able to keep its record clean at 18-0 with a 62-37 victory.

MHS has now won 33 games in a row and can tie the school record with a triumph Tuesday at Augusta. Bullpup coach Kurt Kinnamon also is nearing the 400-win mark at MHS as this was No. 398 against only 70 losses.

The Bullpups were able to run away and hide despite the fact both Payton Stephens and Avery Gabel missed the game, Stephens with a sore knee and Gabel with the flu.

Hutchinson tried to control the tempo by sitting back in a zone and the Bullpups were content to fire away in the first half, launching 12 3-point bombs with five striking to lead 27-16.

But MHS pounded away at the soft underbelly inside to start the second half and the rout was on. The 'Hawks' physical style led to a parade at the line, where the Bullpups cashed in 21 of 28.

"We felt we needed to do a better job of getting it inside," Kinnamon said. "I thought the kids did a good job of that. I thought we did a good job of being patient against that (zone), a much better job in the second half."

Kyler Kinnamon led the Bullpups with 14 points and flummoxed the Salthawks with his relentless defensive pressure. Drew Pyle scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half and Nathan Nutter furnished 10.

Trent Webster scored 14 points for Hutch, which managed just nine field goals in the four quarters.

MHS remains on the road for a potential dangerous game on Tuesday at Augusta, which has played much better in recent games.

The MHS JVs were a 57-49 winner behind 12 points by Mason Alexander and 10 by Jacob Loecker.

The MHS freshmen recorded their fourth win of the week with a 58-38 triumph. Drew Labertew scored 17 points to lead the Bullpups, while Sam Brossard pitched in 13. The Bullpups play high-scoring Goddard Eisenhower Monday night in the finals of the Hutchinson Invitational. Tip time is 7:30 p.m.
