TOPEKA — McPherson High’s Eric Gaeddert is still in the hunt for a state swimming championship today.

The Bullpup sophomore reached the championship finals of the 200 freestyle after placing seventh Friday in the preliminaries.

He’ll also race this afternoon in the consolation round of the 100 breaststroke. He is the only Bullpup to qualify for today’s action, though the 200 freestyle relay team of Gaeddert, Max Howe, Gavin Soukup and Carson Stone is the No. 1 alternate should a team drop out.

Gaeddert hopes to move up a few spots today in the championship finals, though he has a long way to go to catch Hayden’s John-Martin Schmidt, who was 10 seconds faster and is the favorite today.

The top eight prelim finishers made the finals, the next eight compete in the consolation round.
