Eldredge, 3 Vikes win regional titles

HAYS — McPherson High’s Austin Eldredge blitzed through his 106-pound bracket to win the Class 4A regional wrestling championship on Saturday.

Eldredge dominated Concordia’s Zach Strait 12-0 in the finals to run his record to 35-1 on the year. He is one of the favorites to make the finals in Salina.

Kaleb Jost took third place at 182 and was the other Bullpup to qualify. He won both of his matches Saturday, including by a fall over Colby’s Connor Edmunson in the third-place match.

Ross Regier at 195 and Ty Goss at 285 wrestled well, but came up just a win short of advancing.

State begins Friday at the Salina Bicentennial Center, with the finals on Saturday.

• 3 VIKINGS TAKE TITLES — Smoky Valley claimed three individual champions, with the big one being Austin Cook at 182.

Cook, who was the 170 state champ last year, pinned Hays’ Ethan Deterding in what many believed to be the best match of the tournament. Cook pinned his way through his four matches.

Austin Lustfield won at 106 and Brandon Archuleta captured the 145 crown. Lustfield won a 6-4 decision over Peyton Lane of Clay Center, while Archuleta nipped Clay Center’s Hunter Mullin 5-4 in his title match.

Jarod DeMott, at 220, took third and also qualified.
