Father Roy Bourgeois, founder of The School of Americas Watch, will speak to campus about his organization’s mission at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24 in Melhorn Hall Room 112.

The School of Americas (renamed in 2001 to the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation) was founded with the purpose of combating communist insurgency in Latin American countries by training soldiers in those areas.

In practice, the combat training school ended up training the dictator leaders of several of those countries, and trained soldiers in interrogation and other combat techniques that have been brought to bear upon the countries’ own citizens.

The School of Americas Watch is a grassroots organization with a mission of closing the school and to change U.S. foreign policy in Latin American countries.
