MHS' Eldredge takes 3rd in state

SALINA — McPherson High’s Austin Eldredge won a pair of narrow decisions on Saturday to capture third place in the 106-pound division of the Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament at the Bicentennial Center.

Eldredge outlasted Independence’s Arthur Jesse 3-2 in his first consolation match, then outfought Baldwin’s Levi Green 4-2 for third.

By going 4-1 on the weekend, Eldredge finished the season with a 39-2 record. 

He is only a sophomore.

In the championship match at 106, Pratt’s Dylan Pellend nipped Basehor-Linwood’s Cody Phippen, 3-2 Pellend had been ranked No. 4 in the class by the KWCA going into the tournament despite the fact he was the only defeated wrestler. Phippen, who entered the tournament ranked No. 1 by the KWCA had defeated No. 2-ranked Eldredge in Friday’s semifinals.

Baldwin won the team title with 113 1/2 points, while Chanute was second with 105. The other plaque went to Holton with 87.
