McPherson High’s girls will attempt to defend their Class 5-1A state bowling championship this morning at Northrock Lanes in Wichita.
The Bullpups were the third and final qualifier last week in the regional meet at Great Bend, trailing Salina South and the host team.
MHS did have the regional champion in Jasmine Wann and third-place finisher in Makenzie Benson.
Other Bullpup bowlers are Alexis Kieffer, Rhianna Smith, Abby Hughes and Ashley LaSalle.
Teams to watch are last week’s other regional champions Shawnee Heights, Lansing and Carroll.
Later today, the Bullpup boys are hoping to improve on last year’s third-place finish. They were third in last week’s regional.
The Bullpups are led by Carl Frazier (third in the regional) and Jeff Reed (eighth). Other MHS bowlers are Kolton Lare, KC Becker, Clayton Ouellette and Talin Goebel.
Teams expected to be in the hunt are last week’s regional champions Topeka West, Sacred Heart, Lansing and Circle.
MHS coach Herb Halinski said the key to success, as usual, is a high percentage on spares.
