NORTH NEWTON — Bethel College is looking for a new football coach.
Marty Mathis, the Threshers’ head coach the past two years, resigned this week to take a position with Walsh University, which is an NCAA Division II school in North Canton, Ohio.
The Threshers were 5-17 in his two years, but made marked improvement on the defensive side of the ball this past season, including a 13-0 shutout of McPherson College. In 2013, the Threshers gave up more yards and points than any team in recent KCAC memory.
"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to lead the Bethel College football program for the 2013 and 2014 seasons," Mathis said in a press release. "I want to thank the Thresher football players for their commitment, respect and care. You are truly tough student-athletes."
Athletic Director Kent Allshouse hopes to have a new coach in place by the time spring football practice starts.
“We certainly appreciate the work coach Mathis did to take a winless program and make it competitive this past season," Allshouse said. "We wish him well in his new position at Walsh."
