MHS boys to state; girls fall short; stories to be posted later Sunday

McPherson High’s boys took care of business Saturday night and defeated Hays 57-46 in the Class 4A Division I sub-state championship game on the Indians’ home floor.

The Bullpups will take a 22-0 record to Salina for a first-round game on Wednesday, with the pairings to be announced on Sunday.

McPherson High’s girls were outlasted 51-49 by Buhler on a pair of Jessica Steffen free throws with 4.2 seconds left in the game. They finished with a 17-5 record.

Both Hesston teams advanced to Class 3A’s state event, the boys 55-49 over Southeast of Saline and the girls 59-42 over Lyons. Both games were at Hesston.

Moundridge’s girls will be in the 2A event at Manhattan after a 41-24 victory over South Central at Inman.

Smoky Valley’s girls came up short against Wichita Trinity Academy in a Class 4A Division II sub-state final at Nickerson, 54-33. Elyria Christian’s girls also lost their sub-state title game in Class 1A Division II to Sylvan-Lucas, 46-38. That game was played in Sylvan Grove.
