McPherson College’s baseball team began the KCAC portion of its schedule here Friday with a split against Saint Mary.
The Spires won the opener 7-5, overcoming an early 2-1 deficit and later holding off a Mac rally that cut the lead from 7-2 to 7-5.
This is one the Bulldogs had to feel like they let get away as they pounded out 14 hits but time and again didn’t deliver the clutch one.
Stephon Miller was 3 for 4 to lead the Bulldogs, while two hits were attained by Kyle McDonald, Evan Willow and Tom Potter.
Jesse Correll took the loss. Colton Stecker pitched 3 1/3 innings of hitless for Mac.
The Bulldogs blasted out to a 7-0 lead after three innings in the second game and then had to sweat out the final four innings in a 7-6 triumph.
Saint Mary scored five times in the fourth and once in the seventh, but Keegan Hays nailed it down.
Miller had three more hits for Mac, while Seth Davenport and Jimmy Fisher had two hits apiece. Fisher and McDonald scored two runs.
Ethan Dowling was the Mac starter before Hays came on in the fourth.
The Bulldogs, now 4-14 overall, play the Spires again today, but this time it’s in Leavenworth.
