McPherson High’s boys aren’t the only local team to repeat as a state champion.
The Hesston girls defeated Cimarron 54-40 Saturday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, completing a 26-0 season in the process.
The Richardson sisters came up immense, with Cami scoring 18 and Caylee 14. Cami made 8 of 10 free throws as Hesston put the game away down the stretch by making 16 of 22 for the game.
Hesston was 25-1 last year to give it a 51-1 record over the last two years. Hesston’s boys, who lost in the first round to Wichita Collegiate, are 47-3 over that same period.
The Moundridge girls’ attempt to make it three state titles in the area fell short as Central Plains used a 20-point fourth quarter to capture the Class 2A title 46-33 at Manhattan’s Bramlage Coliseum.
MHS led 11-7 after a quarter and 16-15 at the half, but it was all Oilers in the second half.
Michelle Schrag’s 13 points led the Wildcats. The Oilers shut down Moundridge star guard Ashley Holler, holding her to six points.
What was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Wildcats ended with a 23-3 record.
