It will be champion against champion when McPherson High’s boys compete in the Hy-Vee Shootout in December on the campus of Avila University in Kansas City, Mo.

The Bullpups, the two-time Class 4A Division I state champions, have been matched against Blue Springs South, which just recently won the state championship in Missouri’s biggest class.

Both teams lose key players, however. McPherson High must replace All-State All-Class first-team selection Kyler Kinnamon, second-team 4A pick Payton Stephens and AVCTL honorable mention Nathan Nutter. Blue Springs South had a team of seven seniors, but two of its best players return.

The teams will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18.

The MHS girls have drawn Lee’s Summit in the game right before at 4 p.m. The Bullpups are coming off a fine 17-5 season, losing in the sub-state finals 51-49 to Buhler. Lee’s Summit was 11-14 this past season with a team that included many underclassmen.
