MHS, Augusta settle nothing in softball showdown

AUGUSTA — Don’t be surprised if we haven’t seen the last of McPherson High’s softball team and Augusta going up against each other.

They might clash again in postseason play, say the state tournament.

The defending Class 4A Division I state champion Orioles and state runner-up Bullpups hooked up for the season opener on Thursday and nothing was settled, as MHS rallied to win the first game 7-6 before Augusta roared back to earn the split in Game 2, 13-12.

However, the Bullpups certainly had to be kicking themselves for not sweeping when they had the chance. They had leads of 7-0 and 11-5 in the nightcap, but Augusta scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to force extras. The Orioles pushed across a run in the ninth for the win.

The Bullpups had rallied to win the first game by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh. MHS had trailed 6-4 at one point.

Chelsey Kerr had a monster game for the Bullpups with two homers and a double, good for four RBIs. Hannah Marshall added two singles.

Madison Hoffman was the winner, as she scattered 13 hits.

The Bullpups pounded out 16 hits in the second game. Kerr had three more, along with two RBIs. Freshman Bailea Crist also had three hits, while Stephanie Farney and Gracy Feil had two apiece.

Hoffman took the loss in relief, as Elle Schrag worked the first four innings and Crist pitched three innings. The MHS defense was somewhat leaky, as four of the runs given up were unearned.

The JV team lost 10-0 and 2-1. In the second game, Kenzie Goering pitched a solid game as both runs she allowed were unearned. She had one of the two hits for the Bullpups, the other by Mayci James. Sheridan Scott had the only hit in the first-game loss. Elle Schrag took the defeat.

MHS is home on Monday for a triangular that includes Great Bend and Mulvane. MHS plays Great Bend at 2 p.m.
