McPherson High’s youthful girls soccer team, off to a 2-0 start with victories last week over the Salina schools, will have its hands full Tuesday in the first round of the ninth annual McPherson Invitational at McPherson Stadium.
The Bullpups, who start all underclassmen, play last year’s tourney runner-up Andover Central at 8 p.m. in the fourth and final game of the day. The Jaguars lost to Maize South 3-2 in last year’s championship game and are expected to be a Class 5A state power this season.
In earlier games Tuesday, Hays plays Salina South at 2 p.m., Newton is matched against Topeka High at 4 p.m., and Maize South begins defense of its championship with a 6 p.m. game against Augusta.
MHS has yet to permit a goal this year. It pitched a 1-0 shutout against Salina South, then followed that up with a 4-0 rout of Salina Central.
The second round is scheduled for Thursday (game times the same), with the championship round on Saturday. Action that day starts at 10 a.m., with games also at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. (championship game).
