ANDALE — Bri Cooks and Noah Jirgens captured gold medals on Thursday as McPherson High’s track and field team opened its season competing in the highly competitive Andale Invitational.

Cooks won the girls’ shot put with a throw of 38-3. Jirgens won the boys’ discus with a toss of 141-3.

All in all, Bullpup coach Jace Pavlovich was pleased.

“I was really happy with our team as a whole,” Pavlovich said. “There is work to be done, but the kids are all willing to improve.”

Kamryn Collins had a second in the 200 for the girls and Klayton Goering was second in the 110 hurdles for the boys.

Pavlovich said a couple of the relay teams also turned in good days, including the girls 4 x 100 relay that nearly broke last year’s mark. The boys’ 4 x 800 relay is “going to be fun to watch,” Pavlovich said.

The Bullpups will go to Newton on Monday.
