McPherson High girls soccer coach Chris Adrian said his team wanted to be playing in the semifinals of Thursday’s McPherson Invitational, but instead they were in the Sunshine Bracket.
At least they made the most of it.
Freshman Aislinn Hughes flashed her speed with a hat trick and MHS recorded its third shutout in four games with a 5-0 domination of Augusta.
“I was pretty happy with the way the girls played today,” said Adrian, whose team is now 3-1. “They were very disappointed to not be playing on the winner’s side of the bracket. It wasn't our best game of the season and it felt like we were stuck in second gear a lot of the time, but we got the job done. My outside defenders and mids played much better in this game and got after Augusta constantly. We really could have had several more goals, but you have to give their keeper (Brittany Johnson) credit for making some great saves.”
MHS led 3-0 at the half on goals by Hughes, Breckon Kaufman and Jessie Kynaston. Hughes had both goals in the second half and also had an assist. MHS got off 11 shots, while the defense never allowed an attempt as Bullpup goalie Sydney Ruder was able to chill between the pipes.
The Bullpups will play Topeka High for fifth place at noon on Saturday.
Defending champion Maize South will play Newton for the championship, with game time 4 p.m. The Mavericks outlasted Andover Central in a PK shootout (4-2) after the teams played to a scoreless tie. Two goals by Brooklyn Entz propelled Newton past Salina South 3-1 in the other semi.
The first game of the day was wild as Topeka High and Hays played to a 3-3 tie before the Trojans outlasted the Indians 6-5 in a PK shootout.
