LINDSBORG — Bill Nelson has resigned as Smoky Valley girls basketball coach after three seasons, though he won’t be leaving the school district.

Nelson has stepped down in order to concentrate on his new 2015-16 duties as the school’s principal.

The Vikings won 12 games in Nelson’s three years, going from two to four to six wins.

“While we didn't get the program to the level we were shooting for, we did improve each year in the number of victories at the varsity level,” Nelson said. “I will miss the girls, the fellowship with the other coaches in the league, as well as the daily practices and preparation that go along with being a head coach.”

Nelson, who was a starting guard on Lindsborg High’s state championship team in 1982, is excited about his new opportunity.

“I am looking forward to my new position in administration,” Nelson said. “Smoky Valley is a great place and I am excited about my new role in the district.”
