BALDWIN CITY — Bethany College thinclads Morgan Darden, Seth Derr and Ben Hanson had strong showings for the Swedes Saturday in the Baker Relays.

Darden led the Swedes with a National A Standard in the hammer throw, winning the event as well as the discus. Derr won the high jump while Hanson was crowned champion in the hammer throw.

The Swede men took fourth out of 14 teams with 72 points, trailing third-place Ottawa University (93). Baker University won the event with 274 points. The Bethany women placed fourth with a score of 88, well in front of fifth place Avila University (40 1/2). Baker also won the women's side with 275.5 points.

Darden was crowned champion in the discus with a throw of 42.15m. She also won the hammer throw with a 50.21m performance.

Derr won the high jump with a 1.82m mark. Hanson was crowned champion in the hammer throw with a 49.97m toss.

"I was very pleased with our team's overall performances," Bethany coach Ken Ciolek said. "We've had two weeks of grueling training and the kids still competed great. Our men's and women's 4 x 4 relays ran awesome and did extremely well. With a little fine tuning, we will be well on our way to conference.”

The Swedes will be back in action on Thursday at Emporia State.
