TOWANDA — It continues to be a maddeningly inconsistent season for the McPherson High girls softball team.
The Bullpups remained at .500 for the season on Monday with a split against Circle, winning the first game 5-1 before losing the nightcap, 13-7.
“We left too many on base, hit too many easy fly outs, made four too many errors and allowed way too many hits,” MHS coach Danica Fitzmorris said. “All in all a frustrating split for a team who has a lot of experience and not enough consistency.”
Fitzmorris said the Bullpups just need to get better in all phases.
“Offensively, we are continuing to expect different results while making the same mistakes in the box,” she said. “We have a lot of work to do before postseason gets here. Defensively we need to figure out how to get out of a two-out. no-run inning before it turns into a three-out, eight-run inning. Allowing 20 hits will never win you a game, at least not a win we want to own.”
The first game was scoreless until the fourth inning when MHS put up three runs and it pushed the lead to 5-0 with a pair in the seventh.
Madison Hoffman secured the win, allowing six hits and walking two, while fanning five. Hannah Marshall and Stephanie Farney both collected two hits. Marshall and Chelsey Kerr hit doubles.
Circle pounded out 20 hits in the second game, which McPherson trailed 3-2 before giving up eight runs in the fourth.
Marshall had two more hits and the only extra-base knock, a double. Elle Schrag took the loss and Hoffman also pitched.
JV results were not available at press time due to a computer error.
MHS is home on Friday for a triangular against Goddard Eisenhower and Salina Central.
