TOWANDA — McPherson High’s baseball team improved its winning streak to six games on Monday with a sweep of Circle.

The Bullpups’ offense is starting to catch up with the pitching and defense as MHS plated 31 runs in the two games.

In the opener, the Bullpups used back-to-back five-run innings as the impetus to a 13-2 rout.

MHS hit up and down the lineup with Griffin Myers and Marcus McDaniel leading the way with three apiece. Jacob Loecker added two.

Micah McCulley picked up the win.

“I was really proud of our guys for jumping on them early and really taking them out of the game early,” MHS coach Heath Gerstner said. “As a staff we were excited about Micah McCulley's start on the mound as he was throwing a high percentage of strikes and attacking their hitters.”

The second game got off to a crazy start as MHS scored nine runs in the first and Circle came right back with six. But while the Bullpups continued to score, the T-birds stalled out as MHS was an 18-8 winner.

The Bullpups whacked out 17 more hits, including three by McDaniel, Myers, Caleb Schmidt and Cody Starkel. Myers and Kolby Reed drove in four runs apiece.

Jacob Loecker was the eventual winning pitcher.

“We wanted to work to develop some pitching and let some other guys throw and as a staff we were a little disappointed in our strike percentage and how we let them hang out,” Gerstner said. “Nevertheless, when you score 18 runs you will be successful.  The story of the game was Jacob Loecker, who came in and gave us a some very quality innings on the mound.”

MHS will be home on Friday to take on Goddard Eisenhower and Salina Central in a triangular, with the first game set for 1:30 p.m. at Grant Complex.

MHS won the first JV game 26-0 behind a no-hitter by Alex Kalkhorst, which included six strikeouts. MHS won the second game, 18-2.
