LINDSBORG — For Hesston High boys tennis coach Mark Dahlsten, the performance by his Swathers on Tuesday was extra special.
It came in the Ron Dahlsten Tennis Classic. Ron Dahlsten is known as the Father of Lindsborg tennis and is still an avid supporter.
“I always like to do well in this tournament since it is named in honor of my father,” Mark Dahlsten said. “I thought our kids competed well, however we all recognize that we can do things better.”
The Swathers scored 62 points for first place, with two firsts, a third and a fourth.
Abilene (52) was second. Other scores were Smoky Valley Black (42), Wichita Collegiate (14), Concordia (12), Smoky Valley Orange (7), Pratt (2) and Hillsboro (0).
Collin Martin won the singles division with a 3-0 record, beating Abilene’s Gabe Johnson 8-2 in the finals. Dahlsten said Martin was able to play aggressively and had to defeat two quality Abilene players.
The doubles team of Grant Dahlsten and Garrett Roth went 4-0 to take first. Mark Dahlsten said he likes the potential of this duo, which was an 8-5 winner in the finals.
Isaac Penner was 2-1 for third in singles, losing to Abilene’s Johnson 8-5 in the semis before bouncing back for an 8-7 win in the third-place match. Gus Williams and Daniel Holthus were 2-2 for fourth place in doubles.
Smoky Valley’s Trey Schneider and Nils Peterson were third in doubles, while Trapper Bellah and Nick Reinert were fifth. Will Bochte was fifth in singles.
