BUHLER — It’s not often a McPherson High-Buhler matchup in any sport is decidedly lopsided, but it was on Monday.

MHS’ softball team trampled the arch-rival Crusaders twice, 16-0 and 17-1. The Bullpups now have won four games in a row to improve to 8-4 as maybe they’re starting to show a semblance to last year’s Class 4A runner-up team.

“It was nice for the opportunity to shift positions to see what opportunity we may have for that in future games,” MHS coach Danica Fitzmorris said. “It took our bats a while to get started in the first game. But once started, the girls did a great job at the plate. Bailea Crist did a nice job in Game 1 pitching, and then Elle (Scharg) and Kenzie Goering took the helm in Game 2 combining for a no-hitter. It was nice to be able to give Maddy Hoffman the night off (from pitching).

In the opener, the Bullpups scored nine runs in the sixth inning to end the game early. Hannah Marshall and Jasmine Wann hit homers, while Crist and Chelsey Kerr smoked triples. Marshall added a double.

Crist threw a two-hitter and did not allow a walk. She fanned four.

In Game 2, Goering pitched three innings and Schrag two as they combined for the no-hitter. Goering had four strikeouts in her varsity debut.

Marshall homered, while Kerr and Wann hit doubles.

The Bullpups have the rest of the week off before playing Monday at powerful Andale.

In JV action, MHS won the opener 15-0 behind a one-hitter by Schrag. She helped her own cause with a homer and four RBIs. Goering added three hits and Halle Giddings drove in three runs.

MHS repeated the feat in Game 2, 15-0. Goering was dynamite on the mound, striking out nine and allowing just two hits. Colaw had a triple and double, while Goering added a double. Colaw had five RBIs, and Goering and Giddings had two apiece.
