SALINA — Class 5A tennis power Salina Central outlasted Class 3A power Hesston 57-55 on Tuesday to win the Salina Central Mustang Classic.
Other team scores were Newton (45), Salina South (40), Smoky Valley (25), Garden City (24), Andover (17) and Emporia (17).
Hesston’s Collin Martin took second in singles, losing to Central’s Jack Weiner 8-1 in the finals. Isaac Penner was fourth for the Swathers.
Smoky Valley’s Drew Bochte was sixth and Jonathan Dahlsten was 15th.
In doubles, Hesston’s Grant Dahlsten and Garrett Roth were fourth, while David Geidel and Kenrick Weaver were eighth.
Smoky Valley’s Nick Reinert and Trapper Bellah were seventh, while Trey Scheneier and Nils Peterson were 13th.
Hesston coach Mark Dahlsten thought it was a good day for his squad.
“I thought we competed well today,” he said. “We really enjoy this tournament and to come and compete as we did was fun for our kids. I am pleased with our performances as we were the only team to have all four entries in the Top 8 of both the singles and the doubles. That being said, we realize that we can still do some things better and we will work to make some adjustments over the course of the next few weeks in preparation for postseason.”
Dahlsten said all his players showed flashes.
“Individually, Collin continues to play very well,” Dahlsten said. “He beat a very good player from Newton and the final was closer than the score would indicate. Isaac had some good moments today as well. His consistency was a bit off, but he competed hard. Grant and Garrett are continuing to show improvement and in both losses the Central teams played very well. David and Kendrick are starting to figure more things out and when they get a bit more aggressive will see good results."
