A significant hailstorm came through McPherson County and the city of McPherson Thursday afternoon. The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning and the hail hit in McPherson between 5:45 and 6 p.m.

Mid Kansas Online Storm Spotter Jerry Bruce estimated the hail at golf ball size, which was confirmed by a report to the National Weather Service by McPherson County Emergency management at 5:49. Lightning from the storm caused a small grass fire in the Roxbury area, as well.

On the electric side, according to official reports, a transformer in the 100 Block of North Hickory behind Wallace Chevrolet was hit by lightning and caused a brief outage, which was fixed last night, according to BPU General Manager Tim Maier.

Maier also said there was one issue in the county. "We have a broken pole at 13th and Moccasin. Last night they took that line out of service. They are in the process of trying to put a splint on it today just to get us through the weekend."

The pole will be replaced next week.
