MOUNDRIDGE — Moundridge’s four-game softball winning streak was snapped Tuesday by Ell-Saline, which swept the Wildcats in a doubleheader.
Game 1 was a doozy as MHS had the game in hand, only to see the Cardinals pull off a stunning comeback for a 4-3 win.
The Wildcats led 3-1 going into the seventh when the Cardinals erupted for three runs to win in walk-off fashion.
Emily Knight pitched a great game, only to be pinned with the loss. Brynne Wedel drove in two runs for MHS during a three-run fourth inning.
Ell-Saline didn’t need any late-game heroics for the sweep, blowing out to a 9-0 lead after two innings to spark a 14-4 success. Chelsey Knight was superb in defeat with a 3 for 3 game. Michelle Schrag added two hits. Elizabeth Ratzlaff took the loss.
“We lost a tough one in the first game,” Wildcat coach Clark Wedel said. “We really played and pitched well enough to get a nice win. We just didn't finish it down the stretch. Unfortunately, that's kind of how this game works sometimes. The negative on the night was that we let the outcome of Game 1 effect our performance in Game 2. We must bounce back better from negative circumstances that happen to us. We just have to be more mentally tough as a team.”
Moundridge is now 4-6 on the year and hosts Inman in a pair of makeup games on Thursday.
