EL DORADO — McPherson High’s softball team was counting on a sweep of El Dorado on Thursday, but managed only a split.
It was all hits and giggles early as the Bullpups pounded the Wildcats into submission in Game 1, 16-3. MHS had a whopping 19 hits.
Jasmine Wann bombed two homers and Hannah Marshall added another. They combined for seven RBIs, with Wann credited with four and Marshall three. Kerr and Stephanie Farney notched three hits, while Madison Hoffman, Sheridan Scott, Stevie Stockham and Gracy Feil all had two, with Feil driving in three runs.
Hoffman got the win on the mound, fanning eight.
But inexplicably, the Bullpups couldn’t close the door on a sweep as once again errors led to a second-game loss as four MHS boots opened the door for a 7-5 Wildcat victory. A five-run second inning by El Dorado proved to be the deciding factor.
A bright spot was the pitching of freshman Bailea Crist, who threw four hitless innings in relief, walking none and fanning four. Elle Schrag took the loss.
MHS’ bats never warmed up like the first game as the Bullpups collected just five hits, including two by Kerr, one of them a homer. She scored two runs and drove in two.
The split leaves the Bullpups are 9-7. They are home Monday to take on Maize South.
The McPherson JVs clocked the Wildcats twice for a sweep.
MHS scored 13 first-inning runs to end the first game early, 23-5. Thirteen walks enabled the Bullpups to stroll to the win. Kenzie Goering had two of the five MHS hits and scored four runs. Halle Giddings drove in four. Schrag was the winner, whiffing six.
The second game was more of the same, 15-4. The Bullpups were able to put their bats on the ball more in this game, with Grace Colaw, Callie Tolbert and Grace Bruton all collecting two hits. Giddings drove in three runs. Goering struck out 11 in the four innings for the win.
