The Traffic Stop: Opening doors

By McPherson Police Department
April 28, 2015

Read the statute here:

No one should open a vehicle door on the moving traffic side of the street unless and until it is SAFE to do so —safe means the open door will not interfere with traffic. Also, no one should leave the door open any longer than is necessary to load or unload people. On crowded side streets this is often the cause of collisions and many drivers do not understand the personal responsibility involved. Check your rear and side view mirrors for approaching traffic including cyclists and motorcycles BEFORE opening your doors. In McPherson, this is a non-moving violation with a fine of $60, plus $75 court cost.
