GREAT BEND — The road for Bethany College’s softball team got very difficult on Wednesday.

Tabor’s Aracelly Vargas hit a two-run walk-off home run in the seventh inning to sink the Swedes 3-1 and drop them into the loser’s bracket of the KCAC Postseason Tournament.

To make matters worse, KCAC regular-season champion Friends was stunned 7-5 by No. 8 Southwestern, which means for the Swedes to advance they have to defeat the Falcons in today’s 2 p.m. game.

Jasmine Stewart took the loss for the Swedes despite pitching a strong game.

“It was a pitching battle today," Bethany coach Janice Esses said. "Jasmine Stewart pitched a really good game and our defense played strong behind her. We had several doubleplays to get us out of innings. We had some good solid contact that went right to their defense. We just couldn't find the hits that Tabor was able to find."

The only Bethany run came on a squeeze bunt by Camille McIver that scored Ashley Montoya.

Bethany takes a 25-24 record into today’s game.

Oddly, the top three seeds in the tournament lost as Friends, Ottawa and Saint Mary were all upset as the bracket was almost turned upside down.
