LINDSBORG — Bethany College superstar thrower Ben Hanson has been named the NAIA National Field Athlete of the Week.
He was selected based on his performance at the Zach Kindler Wildcat Open last week in Baldwin City.
Hanson won two of his three events. He won the hammer throw in 188-5, which was a season best and ranks him fifth in NAIA.
Hanson also won the discus throw with a heave of 154-1, improving his National A standard. He tossed the shot put with National B standard of 47-5 3/4.
"This is quite an honor for Ben and Bethany College track and field,” Bethany throws coach Drew Frizzell said. “As the season has progressed, so has Ben. He continues to prove he is a top contender in the NAIA. We are all proud of him and what he stands for. Now it is time to piece everything together as we head into the conference and national meets."
This is Hanson’s first career National Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week award. It is the second time in the past two years the track team has had a national award winner. Last season Seth Derr won the award on April 30 for his javelin performance at the Drake Relays.
Hanson and the Swedes are competing today and Saturday in the KCAC Championships in Lindsborg.
