TOPEKA — McPherson High graduates Casyn Buchman and Joel Piper received end-of-the-year awards from Washburn University during the school’s recent Senior Night athletic banquet.

Buchman was named Washburn’s Outstanding Female Athlete. She competed for the Ichabods both in basketball and tennis and was a team leader in both sports. Buchman will go down as one of the best players in school history in both sports as she was a contributor from the time she stepped on campus as a freshman.

Piper, who was a quarterback for the Ichabods’ football team, was named Washburn’s Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Buchman and Piper both had outstanding careers at McPherson High. Buchman is on the MHS Wall of Fame as she was a state doubles champion in tennis and was an All-State basketball player. Piper was the Bullpups’ all-time leading passer until Tyler Matthews broke his records.
