DERBY — McPherson High sophomore golfer Jacob Lackey captured what could be considered his first interscholastic “major” on Tuesday when he won the AVCTL Division III championship at Derby.
Lackey shot a 76 to edge Buhler's Dylan Schmitt by a stroke. Lackey has been a consistent Top 10 finisher this season, but this could be the breakthrough win that propels him to greater heights.
The Bullpups finished fourth as a team, with Rose Hill taking first with a 319, one stroke ahead of Buhler. Augusta was next with 326, while MHS shot 338. Winfield (359) and El Dorado (374) completed the order.
McPherson's CJ Steiner just missed the Top 10 by one stroke after fashioning an 82. Other Bullpup scores were Kaden Warren (88), Drew Pyle (92), Sam Minnick (94) and Casey Cheek (97).
The Bullpups play in the regional Monday at Abilene. Of course, they are hoping to qualify for state since it will be held the day after Memorial Day at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson.
