EL DORADO — McPherson High’s Katie Wurm came away with both an individual and relay gold medal on Saturday to highlight the Bullpups’ performances in the AVCTL Division II-III-IV Championships.

Wurm captured the 50 freestyle and was part of the 200 freestyle relay team that included Ellen Yowell, Megan Cutting and Kellsie Corrigan.

The Bullpups basically maxed out to their potential, as they finished fourth out of the eight teams, with D-II power Andover winning the title.

“AVCTL turned out to be the event of the season,” first-year MHS coach Abby Bradstreet said. “It was such an exciting meet with girls dropping major times throughout the entire meet. Out of the 25 races McPherson swam, 16 of those resulted in a personal-best times for our swimmers. Our biggest time drops came from Lindsey Moore in the 200 freestyle (7 seconds), Kellsie Corrigan in the 200 individual medley (6 seconds), Megan Cutting in the 100 butterfly (5 seconds), Amanda Starkel and Mandi Handlin in the 100 freestyle (5 seconds), Macy Hubbard in the 500 freestyle (5 seconds) and Hannah Stecklein in the 100 breaststroke (5 seconds).”

Bradstreet said most observers don’t realize how difficult it is to drop just a second or two, so the Bullpup numbers were astounding.

“We had several other events where 4 seconds was dropped,” Bradstreet said. “In swimming, it is hard to drop even one second, so dropping that much time is unbelievable. The girls have put in so much hard work throughout the season and it was very rewarding to have it all pay off for them today.”

In addition to Wurm, Cutting had a pair of seconds in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke to spark the Bullpups to their upper-division finish.

MHS now prepares for state next weekend in Topeka.

“We have a total of seven girls participating in the state swim meet this coming Friday and Saturday, but after today's events we have some girls who might earn spots based off of considerations, which could allow even more girls to attend and participate in the state competition on our relays,” Bradstreet said. “We will know who is for sure going and what they are swimming on Tuesday.”
