ABILENE — McPherson High’s golf team will be active participants when Turkey Creek hosts the Class 4A State Tournament next Tuesday.
Bullpups CJ Steiner and Kaden Warren will be in the field after qualifying as medalists during Monday’s regional.
Steiner shot an 83 and Warren made it on the 84 cut line. They will be among the nearly 100 players in the field.
Bullpup coach Kurt Kinnamon was pleased for both players, who both got off to good starts on their front nine before holding on during the inward half.
MHS experienced heart-break in the form of Casey Cheek, who needed to save just one stroke somewhere during his round as he missed by one with an 85.
The Bullpups did not get in, however, as a team as Buhler (321) and Wamego (322) were the qualifiers. McPherson took third with 342, as Great Life Golf Course proved to be a bear in windy playing conditions. Only four golfers broke 80, with 77 the best score.
MHS’ top golfer all season and one of the best in the state, AVCTL Division III champion Jacob Lackey, saw his chances for a state berth derailed on his 10th hole when he made a 10. He wound up shooting 90, while other scores were Sam Minnick (99) and Drew Pyle (110).
Lackey had enjoyed a tremendous season and Kinnamon expects him to bounce back and be a major factor next season. All six Bullpups who competed in the regional are underclassmen, so the future looks bright.
More about the state tournament will be announced in the coming days.
