LINDSBORG — Bethany College men’s basketball coach Clair Oleen has announced the signing of two high school graduates to letters of intent.
D’mitri Newson and Dalantae Kelly, teammates at Smoky Hill High School in Aurora, Colo., will continue to play together for four more years.
Newson, a 6-1 guard, averaged 7.1 points and 3.3 rebounds, along with 4.5 assists and 2.7 steals. He shot 55 percent from the field, 45 percent from 3-point and 83 percent from the foul line.
“D’mitri is the brother of current Swede and All-KCAC guard, Jonathan Gidson," Oleen said. "He is a long guard who is a good shooter from either midrange or from behind the 3-point line. He has also shown that he can guard the ball well and is hard to breakdown off the dribble."
Kelly is also a 6-1 guard and was an honorable mention All-Conference in 2015.
He averaged 12.5 points, 5.7 assists and 4 rebounds. He made 56 percent of his field goal attempts and shot 75 percent from the foul line.
“We are pleased to have Dalantae join Bethany basketball and continue his education at Bethany College,” Oleen said. “He is a long-and-athletic guard who facilitates well when he penetrates. He makes good reads and passes, but he can also score from 3, midrange or at the rim. We also like his ability to defend on the ball. Dalantae's best basketball is ahead of him as he continues to develop his skill set.”
D'mitri is the son of Jesse Meadows and Falicia Newson. He wants to study Forensic Science while at Bethany. Dalantae is the son of Roxanne Lee and Daniel Kelly. He will study in the Criminal Justice program.
