WICHITA — McPherson High’s girls had a good first day Friday in the Kansas State Track and Field Championships.

The Bullpups had three Top-4 placers to score 18 points, good for a tie for third with Andale. Baldwin (29) and Paola (27) were sitting 1-2 after the first day. MHS, however, only has a couple of scoring chances remaining.

Defending 4A long jump champion Amy Suenram gave it a spirited try for a repeat, but wound up taking second place with a leap of 17-0. Buhler’s Alex Keller went 17-11 1/4 to easily win the event as AVCTL Division III produced the top two jumpers.

Bri Cooks was third in the shot put with a 40-11. Baldwin’s Alexia Stein had a mighty heave of 47-1 1/2 for the gold and Paola’s Madison O’Brien was the silver medalist with a 42-5.

MHS’ Megan Pedersen tied for fourth in the high jump at 5-2. Independence’s Shaina Vannoster and Chanute’s Madi Rollins both cleared 5-4, with Vannoster winning the tiebreaker in the battle of Southeast Kansas League stars.

Also on Friday, MHS qualified Chris Stoppel in the 200 meters, both 4 x 100 relays teams and Spenser Wine in the 110 hurdles for today’s finals.
