4 baseball Bullpups make D-III 1st team

Class 4A Division I state baseball runner-up McPherson High dominated the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division III selections as four Bullpups earned first-team honors while four more players were chosen honorable mention.

Also, first-year Bullpup coach Heath Gerstner shared Coach of the Year honors with Scott Carr of Rose Hill. Their teams met in the state semifinals today, with the Bullpups winning an 8-7 decision in nine innings.

Bullpups making the first team were catcher Cody Starkel, first baseman Marcus McDaniel and third baseman Casen Hoover, while Caleb Schmidt made the first team at two positions, outfield and pitcher.

No Bullpups made the second team, but honorable mention picks were second baseman Griffin Myers, pitchers McDaniel and Micah McCulley and DH Michael Saverino.

Augusta’s Mason Hiser was selected the league’s MVP.
