United Way triathlon offers new challenge

Registration is open for the annual United Way of McPherson County Triathlon fundraiser.

United Way Executive Director Anne Kirchner says traditionally, the triathlon has involved individuals or relay teams, mostly friends and family who have come together to compete.

“But in past years, we've noticed an increase in companies that are submitting that are submitting different relay teams,” Kirchner said. “And so that got us to thinking, to raise some additional dollars, if we offered a corporate challenge we could hopefully engage some new businesses and new companies.”

The Corporate Challenge will allow businesses to put together teams of three to compete for a traveling trophy designed by The Clayworks at Disability Supports. Any company achieving first place for three consecutive years will own the trophy permanently.

“And one team member has to be an employee of the company,” Kirchner said. “The other team members can be employees, spouses of employees or children of employees. And the business or company has to be operating in McPherson County. Some of that is just driven by the simple fact that all of our dollars stay in McPherson County to help the people that live here.”

This year's United Way of McPherson County Triathlon will be held August 15. The annual fundraiser attracts more than 200 participants from across Kansas and surrounding states.
