18 Express goes 8-0 to win tourney

KANSAS CITY — McPherson’s 18 Lady Express roared through the USSSA Elite Summer Showcase Softball Tournament over the weekend by going 8-0 to secure the championship.

The team is now 14-0 on the season.

Here is a summary:

• Express 12, Team 4-13 Stars 0 — Chelsey Kerr had a huge game with a triple and double, good for four RBIs. Hannah Marshall drove in three runs with a double. Alex Landwehr furnished two RBIs for good measure. Madison Hoffman pitched a three-inning no-hitter.

• Express 2, Manhattan Optimist 1 — Julie Sinclair pitched a two-hitter and a run in the fourth inning broke a 1-all tie. Sinclair fanned six and the only run she allowed was unearned. The Express had only three hits, two by Hoffman. 

• Express 15, Topeka Heat 3 — The Express applied the early heat with six runs in the first and four in the second. Jasmine Wann and Marissa Axelson both homered and drove in four runs apiece. Marshall was 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs. Hoffman scattered seven hits for the win.

• Express 6, Southern Strike 0 — Sinclair pitched her second straight dazzling game, throwing a two-hit shutout. Marshall drove in three runs and Sinclair helped her own cause with two RBIs with a triple.

• Express 8, Storm 2 — Hoffman worked around seven hits to pick up the win and helped herself with two hits at the plate. Marshall, Sinclair and Chelsey Kerr also collected two hits.

• Express 9, Moxie 2 — Sinclair gave up seven hits, but only two runs. Chelsey Kerr homered and drove in three runs. Marshall, Wann and Axelson all drove in two runs. The Kerr sisters both scored three.

• Express 4, Clash 0 — Hoffman and Sinclair split the mound duties, both allowing two hits and no runs. Hoffman had two hits, including a triple.

• Express 6, Manhattan Sting 2 — Sinclair allowed only four hits and fanned seven, while seven Express players had one hit each. Wann and Marshall had the big hits with doubles.

The team plays in the Summer Showcase this weekend in Hutchinson.
